Hpa-An is the capital of Kayin State in southeastern Myanmar, set on the bank of the Thanlwin, known in English as the Salween. On a map the broad river curves past the town. Its streets form a compact grid close to the water, and roads lead out across the flat, cultivated plain.
The landscape around Hpa-An is famous for its karst: steep limestone mountains that rise straight out of the rice fields. Mount Zwegabin is the best known of them, and many peaks hold caves filled with Buddhist images. That makes the area a destination for pilgrims and travellers.
