Īteya lies in the Arsi area of Oromia, in the Ethiopian highlands southeast of Addis Ababa. The surrounding plateau is known as one of the country's main grain-growing regions. On the map, the town appears as a small grid of streets along a main road, surrounded by broad expanses of cultivated land.
The rhythm of the town follows the farming year, and the roads leading out connect it to villages across the plateau. Beyond the fields, the terrain rises towards higher ground, and small streams cross the open land in shallow valleys.
