Jiangping is a coastal town in the far south of Guangxi, close to China’s border with Vietnam. From above, its map is dominated by the shoreline of the Gulf of Tonkin: an irregular edge of bays, flats and low land where the streets stop and open water begins.
The town is best known as the home of the Jing people, one of China’s smallest ethnic minorities, whose communities are traditionally associated with three small islands here that are now joined to the mainland.
