Jiaping lies in the municipality of Chongqing, in the hilly country southwest of the city centre. The terrain here is folded into ridges and small valleys, and from above the town appears as a compact cluster of streets set into the landscape, with roads that curve and switch back as they follow the contours of the hills.
This part of Chongqing is largely rural, with terraced fields, ponds and scattered farm settlements covering the slopes between towns. The built area tends to concentrate along main roads and at valley junctions, while smaller paths spread into the surrounding countryside.
