Kalamazoo sits in southwest Michigan, roughly halfway between Detroit and Chicago, where the Kalamazoo River bends north on its way to Lake Michigan. The downtown grid lies just west of the river, and from there streets spread out gradually across a landscape of low hills, small lakes and quiet residential neighbourhoods.
In 1959 the city closed part of Burdick Street to traffic and created the Kalamazoo Mall, one of the first pedestrian shopping streets in the United States. Nearby Bronson Park forms a green block at the civic centre. To the west, Western Michigan University spreads over hills beside Kalamazoo College, which occupies a smaller hilltop campus of its own.
The city is also known for the Kalamazoo Promise, which since 2005 has covered college tuition for graduates of its public schools, and for the guitars once made here by Gibson.
