Kalol lies in Gandhinagar district of Gujarat, north of Ahmedabad and west of the state capital, Gandhinagar. The land is flat and dry, part of the broad north Gujarat plain. The town has grown around its railway station and along the main roads, with an older, closely built centre surrounded by newer housing societies and industrial estates.
The town gives its name to the Kalol oil field, one of the early petroleum finds in Gujarat, and wells are scattered across the farmland around it. A large IFFCO fertiliser plant also operates here. These industries, together with the railway toward Mehsana and the highway to Ahmedabad, shape a town whose outline is defined by transport routes and work sites.
