Kencong lies in the southwestern part of Jember Regency in East Java, on the low plain that stretches toward the island's southern coast. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded by a patchwork of irrigated rice fields, where the lines of canals and field boundaries are almost as prominent as the roads themselves.
The built-up area follows its main roads outward, with houses and small lanes lining them in long ribbons before thinning into villages.
