Kesennuma Map Poster & Print
Kesennuma sits in the far northeast of Miyagi Prefecture on the Sanriku coast, where steep hills meet the sea in a series of drowned valleys. From above, the city curls around the long, narrow Kesennuma Bay. The harbour and fish market fill the inner bay, and residential areas spread up the valleys and along the shore on both sides.
It is one of Japan's major fishing ports, known in particular for bonito and for shark catches. The city was badly damaged by the tsunami and fires of March 2011, and the rebuilt waterfront now includes raised ground and new seawalls. In 2019 a bridge was opened linking the mainland to Oshima, the island at the bay entrance.

The wooded island of Oshima closes off the bay to the sea and is now linked to the mainland by a road bridge opened in 2019.

Beyond the city, the coast breaks into narrow inlets and steep headlands, the characteristic drowned-valley shoreline of the Sanriku region.
