Khuldabad sits on a plateau in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, a short distance from the rock-cut caves of Ellora. On a map the town is small and compact. Its older part is enclosed by remnants of walls and gates, with narrow lanes inside. The road to Ellora and Aurangabad runs through, and open Deccan country falls away around it.
The town is known as a Sufi centre, sometimes called the valley of saints, with many dargahs and tombs. The most famous is the simple, open-air grave of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who asked to be buried here near the shrine of his spiritual teacher. That history gives Khuldabad a significance far beyond its size.

Road to Ellora
The main road links Khuldabad to the Ellora caves and on to Aurangabad. It is the clearest line through the composition and ties the town to its region.
