Kissimmee lies in central Florida, south of Orlando, on the northern shore of Lake Tohopekaliga. From above, the old downtown sits close to the lake, with a small grid of streets near the waterfront. Beyond it, the city spreads out along wide roads, with shopping strips, housing developments and a scattering of smaller lakes and wetlands.
Kissimmee is the seat of Osceola County and was once a cattle and steamboat town. Its position changed in the 1970s, when Walt Disney World opened nearby. U.S. 192, the main road running west from Kissimmee toward the parks, is lined with hotels, restaurants and attractions.
A Kissimmee map poster shows the city between the lake and the road. Lake Tohopekaliga takes up a large part of the frame, and the grid of the old town sits on its shore. Suburban streets and the highway corridor stretch out to the west, so the frame shows both the old town and the newer growth.
