Klaipėda Map Poster & Print
Klaipėda is Lithuania's only seaport, and water defines its map. The city lines the eastern shore of a narrow strait that connects the Curonian Lagoon with the Baltic Sea. Directly opposite lies the northern tip of the Curonian Spit, a long, thin strip of dunes and pine forest. Docks, quays and harbour basins stretch for kilometres along the waterfront.
The small Danė River flows through the heart of the city before it joins the strait. The Old Town sits on its southern bank, in a compact grid of streets laid out when the city was known as Memel. Theatre Square and the remains of the old castle and its bastions lie close to the point where river and harbour meet.
North of the centre, residential districts extend toward the seaside area of Giruliai, with the resort town of Palanga further up the coast. Ferries cross the strait to Smiltynė on the spit. This short river winds through the centre, lined with quays and small bridges. It divides the Old Town from the newer districts to the north.
