Kohtla-Järve Map Poster & Print
Kohtla-Järve is one of the most unusual cities in Estonia on a map. Instead of a single compact centre, it consists of several districts separated by forest, fields and other municipalities, the main ones being Järve and Ahtme, with smaller parts such as Sompa and Kukruse. Seen from above, the city looks like a set of islands spread across north-eastern Estonia.
This shape comes from oil shale. Settlements grew around the mines and processing plants of Ida-Virumaa, and they were joined administratively into one city in the Soviet period. The industrial heritage is still clear in the landscape, especially in the large ash hills that rise above the flat land, and most residents speak Russian as their first language.
A Kohtla-Järve map poster captures this fragmented city in one frame: blocks of apartment buildings, industrial areas, rail lines and the green spaces between districts. It is an honest and striking map, meaningful for anyone connected to Ida-Virumaa and interesting to anyone who likes cities with an unusual form.

Ash hills
The large waste hills left by oil-shale processing rise near the industrial areas, forming unusual shapes and a distinctive landmark of the region.
Housing blocks
Soviet-era residential areas form regular patterns of large blocks and courtyards, giving the poster a strong geometric texture in each district.

Kohtla-Järve is home to many families who have lived and worked with oil shale for generations. A map of its districts tells the city's story at a glance and looks unlike any other urban poster.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Printed posters are available on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
