Korsakov Map Poster & Print
Korsakov lies on the northern shore of Aniva Bay, about forty kilometres south of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and is the main seaport of southern Sakhalin. The town climbs from the harbour up a series of hills and ravines, so its streets curve along the slopes. The port, with its piers and breakwaters, occupies the waterfront below.
The settlement was founded in 1853 as a Russian military post. From 1905 to 1945 the southern half of Sakhalin belonged to Japan, and during that time the town was known as Ōtomari. Today it handles freight and fishing vessels, and a large liquefied natural gas plant stands on the shore of the bay a short distance away.
A Korsakov map poster shows a town shaped by water and relief. The long curve of the coastline, the geometry of the harbour and the winding streets on the hills create a composition with clear layers. The bay fills a large part of the frame and gives the design a calm, open lower half.

Piers, breakwaters and quays extend into the bay in straight, angular shapes, forming the most geometric part of the map below the hillside streets.
Hillside streets
Above the port, streets follow the slopes and valleys and curve and branch instead of forming a grid, so the upper town has a distinctive, flowing pattern.
