Kungälv sits on the Nordre älv, the northern branch of the Göta älv, a short distance north of Gothenburg. The medieval fortress of Bohus is the town's best-known sight. Construction began in the early fourteenth century, when this stretch of river lay on the border between Norway and Sweden, and today the ruins stand on a rocky hill surrounded by water, next to the town.
On the map, the older part of Kungälv follows a long, narrow line between a steep hillside and the river. The historic main street and the low wooden houses along it trace that strip. Newer housing areas spread over the surrounding heights, and the E6 motorway and a bridge cross the water to the south.

Gamla Kungälv runs as a narrow band between the hillside and the river, lined with historic wooden houses. On the map it appears as one long street with short side lanes.
