Kupyansk lies in Kharkiv Oblast in eastern Ukraine, on the Oskil River. The river divides the town into separate parts, and bridges connect the districts on either bank. Kupyansk grew as an important railway junction, and on the map several lines converge on the town, crossing the river and fanning out through the surrounding country.
The combination of river, rail and street grid gives the print a strong structure. The central districts have a regular layout of blocks, while rail yards and embankments form long, sweeping curves. Around the town, fields and wooded areas spread across the gently rolling steppe.
