Fortress origins
Kurtamysh was founded as an eighteenth-century fortress on a defensive line in the steppe, and the town grew from that outpost into a district centre.

Kurtamysh Map Poster & Print
Kurtamysh lies in the south of Kurgan Oblast, on the southern edge of the West Siberian Plain. It began in the eighteenth century as a fortress on a defensive line built to protect Russian settlements in the steppe. It takes its name from the Kurtamysh River, the small river on whose banks the town stands.
From above, Kurtamysh has the straightforward order common to Russian provincial towns of the steppe. Long, straight streets run in parallel, lined mostly with low houses and garden plots, and shorter roads cross them at regular intervals. The river bends through the town, and its valley breaks the grid in places with curves and open green space.
The land around is flat and dotted with small lakes and birch groves, typical of the Trans-Ural forest-steppe, and fields stretch away in large rectangles. A Kurtamysh map poster captures this spare, horizontal landscape of a regular town, a winding river and wide open land. Its clean lines suit a quiet, uncluttered interior.

Parallel streets
Long straight streets with low houses and gardens run side by side, giving the map an even, ordered rhythm typical of Siberian provincial towns.
River bends
The small Kurtamysh River winds through the town, breaking the regular pattern with curves, banks and small patches of open ground.

Many people from small towns in the Trans-Urals now live in Yekaterinburg, Moscow or abroad, and a map of Kurtamysh keeps the streets of childhood close. Its clean, regular plan also works well simply as a piece of graphic design.
