Longyan lies in the mountainous west of Fujian, in a basin surrounded by green hills. The central districts follow the valley floor, and from above the city looks stretched and elongated, with streets packed into the level ground and stopping abruptly where the slopes begin. A river runs through the centre, crossed by a sequence of bridges that tie the two sides together.
Newer districts have spread into side valleys and onto higher ground, but the hills remain the dominant feature of the map and leave large blank areas around the built-up core. Expressways and rail lines thread along the valleys and through tunnels, appearing on the poster as long lines that disappear into the surrounding green.
The prefecture is best known for the Fujian Tulou, the large round and square earthen houses of the Hakka people, several of which in Yongding district are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
