Macomb is the seat of McDonough County in western Illinois, set in flat prairie farmland. On the map, the town is a clear American grid: straight streets running north–south and east–west, with the courthouse square at the centre and rectangular blocks in every direction.
Western Illinois University occupies a large campus on the town's north-west side, where the grid gives way to curving drives, quads and open lawns. A Macomb map poster shows both parts clearly, the regular downtown and the looser layout of the campus.
