Madang sits on a low peninsula on the north coast of Papua New Guinea, facing Astrolabe Bay. From above, the town is shaped by water on almost every side. The harbour, small inlets and a lagoon scattered with islands create an intricate coastline, while streets and green spaces fill the land between them.
Madang is often described as one of the most attractive towns in the Pacific, known for its shaded streets, waterfront parks and nearby reefs. The town was heavily affected during the Second World War, and a coastwatchers' memorial lighthouse stands on the waterfront as a reminder of that period.
