Madaoua is a town in the Tahoua Region of southern Niger, the seat of a department of the same name, not far from the border with Nigeria. It lies in the Sahel, where cultivated land alternates with dry scrub. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and walled compounds surrounded by open country.
The area is largely Hausa-speaking and oriented toward farming and trade. Seasonal watercourses, dry for much of the year, cross the surrounding land, and the plots along them are cultivated when water allows. The Tahoua region is well known for its onions. A national road crosses the town, linking it with other centres of southern Niger.
