Mata-Utu Map Poster & Print
Mata-Utu is the capital of Wallis and Futuna, a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific, and the chief village of Uvea, as Wallis Island is known locally. It sits on the island's eastern shore, looking out over a wide lagoon enclosed by a barrier reef. The territory keeps its customary kingdoms, and the king of Uvea, the Lavelua, has his residence here.
On a map the village is modest: a coastal road runs along the shore, with a small cluster of lanes behind it and a wharf reaching into the lagoon. Beyond the reef the islets, or motu, form a broken ring offshore, and the interior of the island rises gently behind the settlement, laced with smaller roads and several crater lakes.
The most recognisable building is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, built of dark volcanic stone and standing near the waterfront beside the royal palace. A Mata-Utu map poster places that small civic centre within its wider setting of lagoon, reef and island, so the print feels as much about water as it does about streets.

Lagoon and motu
A broad lagoon separates the shore from a scatter of small islets along the barrier reef, giving the composition a wide, calm band of open water.
Cathedral and palace
The cathedral and the Lavelua's palace stand together near the seafront, marking the ceremonial heart of the village within its small cluster of streets.

Mata-Utu is a place few people pass through by chance, so a map of it usually carries a real story: a posting in the territory, family ties to Wallis, or a long voyage across the Pacific. The lagoon setting makes a restful image for a living room or study.
