Mattoon lies in Coles County in east-central Illinois, on flat prairie farmland. The town was founded in the 1850s where two railroads crossed, and that crossing still shapes the map: rail lines cut through the street grid, and the downtown sits close to where they meet.
Around the centre, residential streets follow a regular grid that stretches evenly in every direction, with Lake Paradise and Lake Mattoon to the southwest. The town is known for its original Burger King, a local restaurant that won the right to keep its name after a trademark dispute with the national chain.
