Mbala sits on the high plateau at Zambia's northern tip, close to the borders with Tanzania and not far above the southern end of Lake Tanganyika. On a map the town appears as a relaxed pattern of streets and larger plots, with open land and tree cover between them, rather than a dense urban centre.
Known as Abercorn in the colonial era, it was the site where German forces in East Africa formally surrendered in November 1918, shortly after the end of the First World War. Today the town is home to the Moto Moto Museum, which holds collections on the history and culture of northern Zambia. The port of Mpulungu lies below it on the lake shore.

The route toward Mpulungu descends from the plateau to Lake Tanganyika, drawing a long line that links the town to the lake shore below.
Kalambo gorge
Not far from Mbala, the Kalambo River drops over Kalambo Falls, one of the tallest uninterrupted waterfalls in Africa and an important archaeological site.
