Mbale is the headquarters of Vihiga County in western Kenya. It lies almost on the equator, in green, rolling country not far from Lake Victoria. The town grew along a main road, and its map shows this clearly. A central strip of shops and offices runs along the road, with smaller roads and paths branching off to homesteads and farms.
