Mbandaka lies on the east bank of the Congo River, close to the point where the Ruki River flows in, and almost exactly on the equator. The city spreads along the waterfront in a long band, with the port and older administrative quarter near the river and residential neighbourhoods reaching inland toward forest and wetland.
Founded in the colonial period as Coquilhatville, the city is the capital of Équateur province and an important stop for boats travelling on the Congo between Kinshasa and Kisangani. Nearby is the Eala botanical garden, established at the start of the twentieth century, and the surrounding lakes and flooded forest wrap the city in water and green.
A Mbandaka map poster is dominated by water: the wide Congo with its islands and channels, the Ruki arriving from the east, and a city drawn in between. It is a composition of broad open areas and a thin, clear line of settlement, which gives it an unusual, almost abstract quality on the wall.
