The plateau
The town occupies a raised, level area with land dropping toward valleys around it, so the built-up zone appears as a distinct, compact shape at the centre of the poster.

Mbanza Kongo Map Poster & Print
Mbanza Kongo stands on a plateau in the north of Angola, not far from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From above, the town occupies high, relatively level ground, with the land falling away into river valleys on several sides. Streets spread across the plateau in a loose grid, and roads leave it along the ridges toward the surrounding countryside.
For centuries this was the capital of the Kingdom of Kongo, one of the largest states in central Africa, and in 2017 its historic remains were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the colonial period the town was called São Salvador. Among its landmarks are the ruins of Kulumbimbi, an early church often described as among the oldest in sub-Saharan Africa.
A Mbanza Kongo map poster shows a small modern town sitting on ground with deep historical weight. In black and white, the compact street pattern on the plateau contrasts with the open slopes and valleys around it, giving the map a clear sense of elevation and place. It is a quiet piece with a significant story behind it.

Historic centre
The heart of the former royal capital, including the Kulumbimbi ruins and the area of the old royal court, lies within the town and forms part of the UNESCO site.
Surrounding valleys
Streams and valleys cut into the landscape beyond the plateau, adding soft curving lines at the edges of the map that frame the town's grid.

Mbanza Kongo matters to many Angolans and to people across the Kongo cultural world, as well as to anyone interested in African history. A map of the old capital is both a personal keepsake and a statement about roots and heritage.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, perhaps with the historic name São Salvador or a meaningful date. Choose from five styles, including Paper and Sand, and download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
