The Taff corridor
The river, the A470 and the railway run side by side down the valley floor, making a spine that every side street eventually returns to.

Merthyr Tydfil Map Poster & Print
From above, Merthyr Tydfil reads as a narrow band rather than a circle. The River Taff runs down the valley floor, and the town follows it closely, with the main road and railway set beside the water. Rows of terraced streets rise in steady contour lines up both slopes, stopping where the open upland begins and the map suddenly empties.
In the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Merthyr was the centre of the iron industry in Wales. The Cyfarthfa and Dowlais works made it the largest town in the country for a time. Much of that industry has gone, but the valley still carries its outline: tightly packed workers' housing, old tramroad lines and former works sites, now given over to parks and estates.
A Merthyr Tydfil map poster shows how firmly geography shaped the town. The valley walls set its width, the river sets its direction, and the northern edge opens toward the Brecon Beacons. Printed in black and white, the plan becomes a study of lines climbing slopes, which is how many people who grew up there remember it.

Contour terraces
Terraced rows follow the hillsides in long parallel curves. On the map they look like lines on a topographic survey, stacked one above another.
Cyfarthfa parkland
The grounds of Cyfarthfa Castle, built for an ironmaster family, make a wide open patch of green among the dense streets on the western side.

Merthyr is a place people tend to leave and still carry with them. A map of the valley, with its terraces and its river, is an easy way to keep a particular street or chapel close, whether you grew up there or have family roots in the ironworks.
You can set your own title and subtitle, add a date that matters to you, and adjust the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, depending on the room and on how stark you want the hillsides to look.
