Mililani Mauka sits on the central plateau of Oahu, between the Waiʻanae and Koʻolau ranges. Mauka is the Hawaiian word for toward the mountains, and the neighbourhood lives up to the name. It spreads upslope from the older Mililani town across the H-2 freeway, on land that was once planted with pineapple.
Its map is classic late-twentieth-century planning. Collector roads sweep in long curves, and smaller streets branch off them into loops and cul-de-sacs, with parks and school grounds set into the pattern at regular intervals. Few straight lines appear anywhere. Deep gulches at the edges cut natural boundaries into the plateau and show up as sharp, green-edged breaks in development.
