Mthatha Map Poster & Print
Mthatha, once called Umtata, lies in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on the Mthatha River. The river loops past the town in deep bends through rolling country, and the centre occupies the ground above it, laid out as a grid of streets from its nineteenth-century founding. Beyond the centre, townships and suburbs spread outward over the surrounding hills in looser patterns.
From 1976 to 1994 the town was the capital of the Transkei, a nominally independent homeland under apartheid, and several large government buildings remain from that period. Today it is the seat of the OR Tambo district and home to Walter Sisulu University, with the N2 highway running through town as its main artery.
Nelson Mandela was born in nearby Mvezo and grew up in Qunu, southwest of the town, and the Nelson Mandela Museum has sites in both Mthatha and Qunu. A Mthatha map poster shows the town at the heart of this landscape: river bends, a compact central grid and roads leading out into the hills.
