Murray sits in the middle of the Salt Lake Valley, directly south of Salt Lake City, on the valley's well-known coordinate grid of numbered streets. The Jordan River runs along its western side, bringing a green corridor of parkland and trails, while Interstate 15 and the TRAX light rail line cut north to south through the city.
The city grew up around smelting; a pair of tall smokestacks was its landmark until their demolition in 1999, and the former smelter site is now home to the Intermountain Medical Center. Murray Park, with its mature trees and pools, occupies a large green space near the centre and is a favourite of local families.
