Nakano sits in the north of Nagano Prefecture, on the gently sloping floor of the Nagano basin. On a map the town centre forms a compact cluster of streets, and beyond it the pattern breaks up into the small, regular plots of farmland and orchards. The Chikuma River runs to the west, and mountains rise to the east.
The area is known for its farming, particularly fruit such as apples and grapes and the cultivation of mushrooms. That agricultural character shows clearly from above: the built-up core is small compared with the wide mosaic of fields, and roads branch out in straight lines towards scattered villages and the foothills.
