Nara lies in the Koulikoro region of Mali, close to the border with Mauritania, on the edge of the Sahel. From above, the town is a spread-out grid of wide, sandy streets and compounds, surrounded by open land with sparse vegetation and tracks leading out in several directions.
The surrounding region is semi-arid, with seasonal rains, grazing lands and scattered villages. Nara has long been a market town serving herders and traders in the area, and its layout reflects a place designed around open space rather than density.
