Nchelenge lies on the eastern shore of Lake Mweru in Zambia's Luapula Province, and the lake dominates any map of the place. The shoreline runs roughly north to south, and the town stretches along it, with houses, markets and landing sites between the road and the water.
Lake Mweru forms part of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fishing is the main activity here, and boats pulled up on the beaches are part of daily life. Inland, the land rises gently into bush and cultivated plots.

The main road runs parallel to the lake and holds the town together. Most buildings are gathered along it, so the settlement forms a long, narrow strip.
Lanes to the water
Short tracks lead from the road down to the beaches and fishing landings. They form a rhythm of small perpendicular lines along the shore.
