Ndiyona lies in the Kavango East region of northeastern Namibia, close to the Okavango River, which forms the border with Angola along this stretch. From above, the settlement looks quite different from a compact town: homesteads and small clusters are spread over a wide area, linked by tracks and a main road running roughly parallel to the river.
The river is central to life in the Kavango regions, and the land near it is used for farming and grazing. On a black-and-white map, the Okavango traces a slow, meandering line, and the settlement pattern follows its direction, loosely gathered where water and road are both close.
