Ningde lies in north-eastern Fujian, on a stretch of coast where mountains come almost to the water's edge. The city's streets fill the narrow flat land between hills and sea, and newer districts have been built on reclaimed land and along the valleys, so the map shows development threading between slopes rather than spreading freely. Offshore, the coastline breaks into bays, peninsulas and islands.
The largest of these inlets, Sandu'ao Bay, is a deep, sheltered natural harbour known for its farming of large yellow croaker. Inland, roads follow the valleys and tunnels cut through the hills, linking the central district with towns across a mountainous prefecture where flat land is always in short supply.
In recent years Ningde has become known as the home of CATL, one of the world's largest makers of batteries for electric vehicles, and industrial zones have grown up around the city.
