North Guwāhāti sits on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam, directly across the river from the city of Guwahati. On a map, the river dominates everything: a broad band of water, with sandbars and channels, separating the town from the dense urban grid on the opposite shore. Low hills rise behind the town, giving its northern side a greener, less crowded pattern.
The town is home to the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, whose large campus, with its lakes and spread-out buildings, forms a distinctive shape on the map.
