Colonial grid
The centre is laid out as an even grid of square blocks around the main plaza. It spreads across the flat altiplano and is easy to read from above.

Oruro Map Poster & Print
Oruro sits at about 3,700 metres on the Bolivian altiplano, one of the highest cities of its size in the world. On a map, the city is a regular colonial grid of blocks on the flat high plain, bordered to the west by the bare hills where mining shaped its history for centuries.
The city is known worldwide for the Carnival of Oruro, recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Its devotion centres on the Virgin of the Socavón, whose large statue stands on Santa Bárbara hill above the city. South of the city lie the shallow lakes Uru Uru and Poopó.
An Oruro map poster shows the even grid against the hills and the open altiplano. The water of Lake Uru Uru adds a soft, irregular shape to the south. It is a stark, open landscape that translates very well into black and white.

Santa Bárbara hill
On the western edge, the hill rises above the city with the statue of the Virgin of the Socavón. It is one of the most recognisable places in Oruro.
Lake Uru Uru
South of the city, the shallow Uru Uru lake spreads across the plain. Its irregular shoreline gives the lower part of the map a soft counterpoint to the grid.

Oruro is a city of mining history, Carnival and strong family ties. A map of it makes a good gift for dancers and musicians of the Carnival, for Bolivians abroad and for travellers who crossed the altiplano.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the year of a Carnival, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A free 900 px preview shows the result first.
