Otjiwarongo lies in central-northern Namibia, in the Otjozondjupa Region, on the main road between Windhoek and the north. From above, it is a neat, well-spaced grid of streets, with the highway and railway passing close by. Suburbs spread out around the central blocks.
Beyond the edge of town, the land opens into thornbush savanna and farmland, and the Waterberg Plateau lies to the east. The name is usually translated from Otjiherero as a pleasant place, or a place where fat cattle graze. That fits a town long tied to ranching and to travellers heading north.
