Palabana lies in Lusaka Province, a short distance east of Zambia's capital, on the central plateau. The country here is gently rolling savanna. It is broken up by farm plots, scattered homesteads and roads that are mostly unpaved. On a map, the settlement appears as a loose spread of buildings, not a compact town.
That openness is what makes the map distinctive. Roads and tracks cross the land in long, slightly irregular lines, linking farms and small clusters of houses. Field boundaries and patches of bush fill the spaces in between. Nearer Lusaka, the built-up area thickens as the city's outskirts reach eastwards.
