Pāonta Sāhib lies in Sirmaur district in southern Himachal Pradesh, on the Yamuna where the river forms the border with Uttarakhand. On a map the town spreads across the flat valley floor. The river marks one edge with a wide, braided channel, and the Shivalik hills rise beyond the streets on the other side.
The town is closely associated with Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, who lived here for several years in the late seventeenth century.
