Paulo Ramos is a town in the interior of Maranhão, in northeast Brazil, away from the coast in the region where the Amazon's edges give way to drier land. It is a municipal centre for a large, mostly rural area, and on the map it appears as a compact town in wide open country.
The streets follow a fairly regular grid, typical of many Brazilian interior towns, with a central area and blocks spreading out from it. A few roads lead away across the landscape towards neighbouring municipalities, and beyond the last houses the map becomes quiet very quickly.
