Perm stretches along both banks of the Kama River in the western foothills of the Urals. On the map the city is unusually long and narrow, following the river for many kilometres, with districts strung along the water and connected by roads and railway lines that run parallel to it.
The city began in 1723 as a copper-smelting works on the Yegoshikha River, a small tributary of the Kama. The historic centre, on the left bank, is laid out in a regular grid of straight streets running parallel and perpendicular to the river, a plan that dates back to the eighteenth century.
A Perm map poster shows a city shaped by its river: wide water, a long embankment, bridges, a grid in the centre and forests on the edges. Perm is also known for its opera and ballet theatre, and it is widely seen as the model for Yuriatin in Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago.
