Portage lies in Porter County, on the southern shore of Lake Michigan between Gary and Michigan City. It reaches the lake at a short stretch of shoreline, surrounded by some of the most important landscapes and industries of the region: the dunes of Indiana Dunes National Park on one side and the steel mills and ports of the lakeshore on the other.
On the map, Portage is made of layers. At the north edge, the lakeshore and the waterway leading to the port form strong lines. Further south, major highways cross the city from east to west, carrying traffic around the southern end of the lake. Between them are neighbourhoods of suburban streets, with parks and wooded areas along the creeks.
