Pyay, historically known as Prome, lies on the east bank of the Irrawaddy in Bago Region, north-west of Yangon. On a map the broad channel fills the western edge, with sandbanks and a far shore that rises toward the hills of the Rakhine Yoma. The town stretches along the water in a band of streets running parallel to the bank, with roads heading inland to the east.
South-east of town are the remains of Sri Ksetra, one of the Pyu Ancient Cities that UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2014. Its brick walls and scattered stupas cover a much larger area than the modern town. Closer in, the gilded Shwesandaw Pagoda crowns a low hill. The railway line from Yangon ends in Pyay, which makes it a natural terminus on the map.
A Pyay map poster shows how a river settlement grew along the Irrawaddy, with the long waterfront, the streets behind it and the roads leading inland toward the old Pyu capital.
