Rochester lies in southeastern Minnesota, in rolling farm country. On a map it has a clear American structure: a regular grid of numbered streets and avenues, a dense downtown, and residential neighbourhoods reaching outward to ring roads and highways. The Zumbro River winds through the city and breaks the grid with its curves.
North of downtown the river widens into Silver Lake, a reservoir that is known locally for the Canada geese that gather there in winter. Parks and green corridors follow the water through the city, softening the rectangular layout.
