Rohnert Park is one of California's clearly planned cities. Built from the late 1950s on land that had been a seed farm, it was laid out in sections, each named with a letter, and within many of them the street names begin with the same letter. On a map this produces distinct neighbourhood units of curving streets and cul-de-sacs, each with its own internal logic.
Highway 101 cuts through the city from north to south, dividing it into two halves and linking it with Santa Rosa and Petaluma. On the eastern side lies Sonoma State University, whose campus occupies a large, open area, and beyond it the land rises toward Sonoma Mountain and Crane Creek Regional Park.
A Rohnert Park map poster shows suburban planning at its most readable. The looping streets, the ordered sections and the straight line of the freeway create a design that is both regular and varied. In black and white, the curving neighbourhoods look almost like patterns, while the campus and the hills add open space along the eastern edge.

The freeway runs straight through Rohnert Park from north to south, the strongest line on the map, dividing the city into eastern and western halves.
