Ropar, officially Rupnagar, lies in Punjab at the point where the Sutlej River emerges from the Shivalik foothills onto the plains. From above, the river is the dominant feature: a broad band of water and sandbanks running past the town, crossed by the headworks that divert its flow into the Sirhind Canal.
The town's history reaches back to the Harappan period, and excavations here have made it one of the known sites of that civilisation in Punjab. Today Ropar is a district headquarters and home to the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, whose campus sits on the outskirts. Streets gather on the river's southern side, with roads leading toward Chandigarh and Anandpur Sahib.
