Turf maze
The maze on the Common is a circular pattern of paths cut into turf. It is the largest of its kind surviving in England and remains visible within the green space east of the centre.

Saffron Walden Map Poster & Print
Saffron Walden sits in the chalk country of northwest Essex, not far from the Cambridgeshire border. It takes its name from the saffron crocus, which was grown here for centuries and used as dye and spice. On a map the old town appears as a tight knot of lanes around the market place, with burgage plots running back from the main streets in long, narrow strips.
Two open spaces stand out. To the east lies the Common, which holds the largest surviving turf maze in England, cut into the grass as a set of concentric paths. To the west, Bridge End Gardens contain a hedge maze. Between them the spire of St Mary's, the largest parish church in Essex, rises beside the scant remains of Walden Castle.
West of the town, the grounds of Audley End House open into broad parkland shaped in the eighteenth century, with the River Cam curving through the lawns. A Saffron Walden map poster shows this contrast clearly: a dense medieval core and a spacious designed landscape beside it, with only a short walk between them.

Medieval street plan
The lanes around the market place keep their medieval layout. Narrow plots running back from the frontages form a fine, comb-like texture on the map.
Audley End park
The parkland around Audley End House spreads west of town. Open lawns, belts of trees and the curving River Cam give that side of the map a softer, more spacious feel.

Saffron Walden is a town people remember through small details, such as a walk round the maze, a wedding at St Mary's or a home down one of the narrow lanes. On a wall, its compact plan looks almost like an engraving.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a street name or a date that matters to you. Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand each give the town a different character. Every size comes as a 300 DPI PNG and a print-ready PDF.
