Sandu lies in the northwest of Hainan, China's southernmost province, in low, flat country not far from the coast. On the map it appears as a compact built-up area at the meeting point of local roads, surrounded by fields, plantations and small villages.
The land here is gently rolling and cut by streams and small reservoirs. Rather than a single dominant feature, the map shows a network: roads leading out in several directions, water in thin lines and small patches, and the fine outline of fields between them.
