Sankagiri lies in Salem district in western Tamil Nadu, beside a steep rocky hill that rises abruptly from the plain. The hill carries the remains of an old fort, and on a map it appears as a dense knot of contour lines immediately next to the town. Streets gather around its base and stretch out along the main highway, giving the settlement a long, linear shape.
The fort holds a notable place in Tamil history: the freedom fighter Dheeran Chinnamalai was executed there by the British in 1805. In more recent times Sankagiri has become known as a centre of the road freight business, and the lorry trade shapes much of the activity along its highway. The Cauvery River flows a short distance to the west.
